HOW TMS WORKS

Sustainable Treatments. Proven Results.

The Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) at Conklin Psychiatric and Integrative Health in Aberdeen, South Dakota is overseen by our board-certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Major Depressive Disorder is among the most disabling illnesses worldwide and most common brain disorders in the United States. TMS offers patients experiencing drug-resistant depression an advanced method of treatment with proven results.

During treatment, a helmet is positioned on the left front side of the head for stimulation of the left prefrontal cortex of the brain. Magnetic pulses are then sent across neural pathways to activate the area of the brain responsible for depression. This helps to restore brain function for lasting change and, in some cases, complete remission—studies have shown that over 50% of patients that have failed 3 antidepressants have achieved complete remission with TMS. In a clinical practice, patient results greatly increase with a response rate of 90% and a 70% remission rate. Remission is defined as total cessation of depressive symptoms.

TMS does not have any systemic side effects, and each session last about 20-30 minutes. Treatments are suggested Monday through Friday for approximately 4-6 weeks. Some maintenance treatments may be indicated. There are no electric shocks or pain associated with this non-invasive procedure. No anesthesia is involved, and patients are able to drive to and from treatments.
